Specs

We're finishing our trip and sadly have to let go our home on wheels. It was bought from another traveller only a few months ago.

This is the SUV version built on the platform of the famous Ford F-150, all mechanics are shared. One of the reasons we chose it is because the F-150 is everywhere so mechanical parts are easy to find in every country.

The truck is very capable (300hp) and has been converted to allow for a couple to live, sleep and cook inside (we stay in hotels maybe one day in a month). It also doesn't look like an RV so allows for stealth camping in big cities. Last, it has a very comfortable ride (leather seats, power adjustable seats and pedals, etc).

Below is a lot of detailed info (click to expand):

Mechanical

  • Automatic Transmission, 6 gears (Ford 6R75)
  • 4WD with adjustable transfer case (2 High / 4 Auto / 4 High / 4 Low) (BorgWarner 4417)
  • 5.4l V8 Triton engine, 300hp
  • No timing belt (timing chain used instead)
  • Mean gas/mileage throughout the trip (fully loaded): 14.28 l/100km or 7.00 km/l or 16.46 mpg
  • Mileage: 300.000 km or 185.000 miles
  • Assembled in Ford Michigan Assembly Plant (Wayne, Michigan, USA)

Comfort

  • Sunroof window
  • Leather seats, power adjustable and with seat AC/heating.
  • 3 area climate control (driver / passenger / rear)
  • Adjustable steering wheel
  • Automatic lamps so you don’t have to worry about a ticket for driving without headlights on in SA

The RV conversion

We built our own wooden bed platform, a wooden box for storage and added the following things:
  • Mattress, of course. 3 section folding with memory foam.
  • Second battery (deep cycle) to power fridge and accessories. BatteryDoctor electronic isolator installed.
  • Inverter to get 110 AC out of the second battery. SunForce pure sine-wave, 1000 watt.
  • Indel B TB41 fridge (41 liters capacity). Dual power DC-AC (12v / 24v / 110v / 220v)
  • 3 burner stove (similar to coleman)
  • 20lb gas cylinder with coleman hose to use with the stove
  • Yakima rocketman roof box for added storage

This truck comes with 3 rows of seats. We removed the middle row to store our clothes under the bed. Third row is still present, always folded down.

Our off road adaptation

  • Added smittybilt winch
  • Farm jack (“hi lift jack)
  • Mud tracks (or “sand tracks”)
  • 20l gasoline tank
  • MIL code scanner (check-engine light scanner)
  • Haynes repair manual for Ford Expedition and Ford F-150 in spanish
  • Standard wheels are 33” diameter (83cm) so we didn’t find the need to replace them.

The not-so-perfect

The truck is in very good general conditions. Contact me if you want a detail of minor issues, none of them was a problem for us during the trip.

The registration paperwork

The truck is still registered under the previous owner's name, he lives in Mendoza Argentina. You can either transfer it to your name or buy it with a Poder that allows you to drive it through the Americas
Transfer costs and taxes are up to the buyer
